Richard Starr with algae collection

description:

A caption found with the image reads, in full: "Prof. Richard C. Starr, Indiana University botanist, is shown with part of the University's collection of more than 800 different strains of algae, simple plants widely used in genetics research and now being studied in many research centers as a food to meet the threat of over-population or to sustain space navigators on long flights. The National Science Foundation has awarded a new grant of $34,000 for five years' support of the collection, of which Starr is director. The algae are grown in glass tubes in a constant-temperature room under continuous fluorescent illumnination. The collection serves as an international 'bank' from which researchers can order pure cultures of algae."
