Robert W. Winters (Bacteriology 1948) and Jay Dermer (Marketing 1951)

image number:

This image does not appear in the 1947 Arbutus yearbook. A caption on the reverse side of the reference print reads, in full: "[typed] Robert W Winter and Jay Dermer [written in pencil] - being awarded a scholarship"

It is difficult to tell from the photo and the caption noted above as to who is handing who the check. This is especially true when you consider the fact that Winters graduates in 1948, making him an upperclassman and more likely to be handing Dermer a check. However, it looks as if Dermer is handing Winters a check. Also, the written portion of the caption is written in a way that one could imply both are receiving scholarships, but then why would either of them be handing a check to the other? More research is being conducted on this image. Image appears to have been shot in a room of the tower of the IMU.

Jay Dermer is the father of Ron Dermer who is currently (2014) the Israel Ambassador to the U.S. in Washington, D.C.

Update (4/4/2014): According to Ron Dermer, the image depicts Jay Dermer handing a check to Winters. Dermer was one of the founding members of Zeta Beta Tau at I.U. and that organization had a scholarship fund that was given to seniors for academic excellence.
