He began teaching chemistry at IU in 1889 and became head of that department in 1895. His retirement was effective November 1, 1938. He died on November 25, 1946. His son, Robert Edward Lyons, Jr., also graduated from IU with BS and MD degrees in 1926 and 1928 respectively. He was a Bloomington physician and coroner of Monroe County.
