description:

This image appears in an un-cited newspaper clipping (probably Indiana Daily Student) found in the 1922 football manager's book (IU Archives collection number C624). The caption reads, in full: "Indiana Tearing Up Golf Course for New Stadium: In these days of intense interest in college athletics a good stadium is more essential than a golf course, so at Indiana they are tearing up a perfectly good links and starting construction on a new athletic plant. The above picture shows contractors excavating on the fairway at the approach to the fourth green. The new stadium, which is to be erected northeast of the gymnasium, will cost $250,000. Indiana will not quit playing golf, but will rearrange the course to made room for the stadium." Another un-cited newspaper clipping found on the following page of the manager's book reads, in full: "DIRT FLIES AT STADIUM SITE: WHERE THEY USED TO PLAY GOLF: With the digging of the first steamshovelful of dirt at the site of the new athletic stadium, hopes for the use of the new football field in time for the Homecoming game next fall were strengthened. About $150,000 will be spent on the stadium proper which will seat 22,000 people." The outline for a future fieldhouse can be seen on the east side of the Men's Gymnasium. The fieldhouse would not be completed until 1928 (eleven years after the construction of the Men's Gymnasium). In the distance, beyond the steam shovel, is Woodlawn Field. Beyond that one can see a row of houses along Woodlawn Avenue where the Collins LLC would eventually be constructed.
