According to Professor Frank Banta, he had not known Herman B Wells while Banta was at Indiana University. He had been picked to be an interpreter for Wells for two reasons: He spoke German and he had graduated from Indiana University.

With the exception of returning to Indiana for the funeral of his father on March 22, 1948, Herman Wells was in Germany from November 1947 to May 1948. During this period Wells was the Adviser on Cultural Affairs to the Military Governor and Acting Chief, Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Occupied Zone, Germany.
