Population Center of Bloomington at Showers Brothers Company

image number:

P0040009

description:

After the 1910 U.S. Census, the U.S. government determined that the exact population center of Bloomington, where there were an equal number of people living North, South, East, and West, was at the main Showers Brothers Furniture factory. The Showers Brothers took advantage of this distinction, erecting a marker in front of the building and declaring themselves to be "The center of the universe" in advertising.

The marker was moved by the city to the lawn of the Monroe County Courthouse after the factory was closed in 1955.
