description:

Douglass' caption on the negative sleeve reads, in full: "Old General Morris House. New Jersey & 13th St. About 1905."

NOTE: When the image is enlarged, "1206" can be seen on one of the posts just below and to the left of the mailbox.

NOTE: ACCORDING TO STAFF AT THE MORRIS-BUTLER HOUSE IN INDIANAPOLIS, THIS IS NOT THE MORRIS BUTLER HOUSE.

The 1898 Sanborn Fire Insurance map for Indianapolis places this house on the northwest corner of 12th and New Jersey streets with the actual address as 1204 North New Jersey. This was the residence of General Thomas Armstrong Morris (1811-1904) who was graduated from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point in 1834.

The view here is from the north looking south on New Jersey street. The white delivery wagon to the south of the house is beginning to head west on Twelfth Street.
