description:

The quote above the entrance is by John Milton from his work "Areopagitica: A speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicensed Printing to the Parliament of England" (1644).

The quote reads, in full: "A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life."

A February 3, 1934 Indiana Daily Student article mentions that the carving seen here was completed on February 2, 1934 by six CWA workers who also completed the carving "Business Administration" above the entrances of what is today (2014) Woodburn Hall.

This image was combined with image P0036719 to create the cover of the February 1942 Indiana Alumni Magazine.
