description:

In his autobiography entitled "Dawn" Theodore Dreiser wrote of his days at IU and Bloomington. In chapter 71 he writes about going on caving expeditions, in part: "...having no social connections of any importance to occupy our time, we did endless exploring...One or two counties...were practically underlain with caves...Every fall and spring, expeditions were organized by the geological department of the university for the purpose of visiting these caves with a view to studying the rock formations...Hall and I joined one of these expeditions, the equipment being an old suit, a half dozen or more candles of good length...and lunch. The leaders carried torches with short handles. I think as many as twenty or twenty-five joined on this first expedition, and we had a glorious time listening to the instructive remarks of the geologist..." He then goes on to tell of an instance where he and [Howard] Hall became lost in a cave.
