The caption for this image reads, in full: "Herman Wells Riding Black Dynamite Rise Photo #432"

It is unknown at this time exactly when and where this photograph was taken. However, it seems logical that based on Wells' apparent age and the fact that the image was shot by Rise Studios of Rapid City, South Dakota that Wells had this photo shot while he was an assistant and graduate student in the Department of Economics at The University of Wisconsin from 1927-1928. Being in Madison, Wisconsin places him near South Dakota into which he may have taken a trip during that time period.

When the photograph was first transferred to the IU Archives it was thought that Wells may have had the photograph taken at the famous Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota (it was known that Wall Drug had a stuffed horse on which visitors could sit and have their photo taken). However, known photographs of the horse at Wall Drug do not seem to match the pose of the horse in this image. It was also discovered later that Wall Drug did not begin operation until December 1931.

While it is still a mystery, it is now thought that the photo was probably taken at Rise Studios, or by Rise Studios somewhere in Rapid City, South Dakota. Research continues.
