Henry S. Bates was a journeyman, printer, actor, shoemaker, and lastly Registrar of Indiana University (11/11/1893 - 1/6/1895). He was the recognized head of the "Bates School of Philosophy" which was located at his shoemaker's shop in Bloomington. He was well respected among members of the community and Indiana University. Pall bearers at his funeral were a virtual who's who of the community including Reverend S.R. Lyons, Dr. Joseph Swain, Professor W.P. Rogers, Walter Bradfute, James Karsell, Dr. William Lowe Bryan, Professor William Rawles, and Professor Ernest Hiram Lindley.
