The Flying Squadron with U.S. President Harding

image number:

description:

The I.U. Memorial Fund Campaign's Flying Squadron with President Harding. The Memorial Fund raised money to build The Indiana Memorial Union building, Memorial Hall, and the 10th Street Memorial Stadium.

After this visit President Harding sent a letter to William Lowe Bryan, dated July 18, 1922, in full: "My dear Dr. Bryan: When you were in Washington recently you told me something about the plans for a memorial to the men of Indiana University who have given their lives for their country in its various wars. I want to tell you how much I approve every effort to rear testimonials of this kind. I think that such appeals, especially to the young men who are yet in the educational stage of their careers, constitute a most useful inspiration to the best citizens and service."

An image similar to this one, and shot at the same time as this image, appears on page 12 of the 1923 Arbutus yearbook; and page 2 of the May 20, 1922 edition of The Indiana Alumnus.

There are two more images very similar to this image in the collections of the IU Archives. One shot by Simmons Photographic News of Washington, D.C. and one shot by Underwood & Underwood of Washington, D.C. (note: the Underwood & Underwood version was used on page 12 of the 1923 Arbutus yearbook).
