image number: | P0031027 |
description: | Church trained with the Army Air Service at Randolph Field, Texas. On December 16th 1941, with their Curtis P-40's, Church and two others were bombing a Japanese airstrip near the city of Vigan in The Philippines. Church's P-40 was struck by enemy fire and caught fire, but Church continued to attack while his plane dove into the ground. This made Church the first Indiana University alum to die during World War II. This image appears on page 29 of the February 1940 and page 5 of the May 1946 issues of the Indiana Alumni Magazine. |
