description:

The reading room in the Indiana University Library. Later, this room became the Warren W. Shirey Registration Center. The Seth Thomas, marble-faced clock, half of which can just be seen at the upper left, was a gift of the class of 1917 and can be found at the University Archives (accession number 0711).

According to page 87 of the July 1938 I.U. Bulletin (Volume 36, #12): the reading room sat 204 readers and the shelving around the walls had space for 6,000 volumes. The stacks of the library consisted of seven levels with a total book capacity of 250,000 volumes. The addition of a wing to the building in 1926 provided additional reading room facilities for 180 students, a larger newspaper room, seminar rooms, more space for cataloging and classification departments, a new room for the bindery, a new room for bound newspapers, and increased space for general storage.

This image appears in the April 1939 edition of the Indiana Alumni Magazine, page 6.

NOTE: The negative envelope itself is dated May 1939. This is obviously a mistake as the image does appear in the April 1939 Alumni Magazine as noted above. Thus, the date for this image is more likely January, February or March of 1939.
