In January 1957, Phil Dickens was hired as I.U.'s next head coach for football. On July 19, 1957 the Big Ten Commissioner suspended Dickens for the entire 1957 season due to "a consistent pattern" of excessive offers to prospects. Thus, Bob Hicks became the interim head coach for the 1957 season.
