Kinsey Institute Purse Incident
The purse was purchased in April 1961 at Stewart's Department Store in Louisville, Kentucky by a member of The Institute for Sex Research. The Institute mailed a letter on May 5, 1961 to the company that designed the purse (Roger Van S, Inc. of New York City). The letter inquired about the ornamental brass on the front of the purse which also contained a flip-lever latching device. The letter reads, in part: "We are...interested in the brass ornamental locking device. The heart-shaped head and the happy smile lend a delicate sort of humor to what is indisputably a delightful practical joke..."
