description:

Jimmy Rayl still (as of March 13, 2019) holds the IU single-game scoring record at 56 points. He did this twice in his career at IU. The first was January 27, 1962 vs. Minnesota, and the second was February 23, 1963 vs. Michigan State. Note that the 56 points were scored during a time period when college basketball did not have a 3-point line. However, when one examines the original shot tracking sheets (IU Archives accession 2015/027 box 311) for these two games and adds one point for each shot noted at 21 feet or beyond (the college 3-point line today is set at 20 feet, 9 inches) we find that Rayl would have scored a minimum of 68 points vs. Minnesota, and 70 points vs. Michigan State.
