description:

This image appears on page 18 of the November 1960 issue of the Indiana Alumni Magazine. The caption reads, in full: "Joseph C. Muhler, DDS, PhD, of the School of Dentistry presents toothpaste and tooth brushes to two of the 12,000 young volunteers who took part in tests of a stannous flouride toothpaste. The dentifrice became the first to be recognized by the American Dental Association as 'an effective decay-preventive agent.' Dr. Muhler has directed basic research which established at Indiana the effectiveness of stannous fluoride against tooth decay." The photo and caption accompany an article on the same page.

Proctor & Gamble paid royalties to Indiana University and used the new formula for CREST toothpaste.

Muhler's papers are housed here at the Indiana University Archives.
