description:

This image appears on page XII of A Life Is More Than A Moment... by Will Counts. The caption reads, in full: Ever-present pipe in mouth, Will Campbell listens on September 4, 1957, as Lt. Col. Marion Johnson, commander of the Arkansas National Guard troops at Central High, tells students Carlotta Walls, Gloria Ray, Ernest Green, and Jane Hill (in back) that his troops are under orders from Governor Orval Faubus not to allow the desegregation of Central High to begin. Campbell was one of several ministers, both black and white, who escorted the students to school. Only two weeks earlier, he had been under Lt. Col. Johnson's command at a summer National Guard camp."
