description:

Written on reverse side of image, in full: "Compliments of | Sadie Leopold | Rensselar Ind | 1897" NOTE: The date on this image must be looked at with a magnifying glass or loupe to reveal that it reads 1897 and not 1877. Sadie and her niece died in Chicago, Illinois at the Iroquois Theatre fire of December 30, 1903. Sadie matriculated at IU on September 21, 1896 and attended thru part of the 1900-1901 school year. She was pursuing an AB degree in English, but did not graduate. According to the national headquarters of Pi Beta Phi, she was initiated into that organization in 1896. Rumors that she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta are not true (the national headquarters of Kappa Alpha Theta says they have no record of her being a member of that sorority). Sadie appears in the 1897 Arbutus yearbook, page 108 as a freshman member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She also appears in the 1899 Arbutus yearbook, page 80 as a junior member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She also appears in the 1900 Arbutus yearbook, page 70 as a senior member of Pi Beta Phi sorority; and page 100 as a member of The Woman's Glee Club where she is listed with four others as "First Soprano". She was "Toastmistress" for the May 12, 1899 Panthygatric Dance.
