description:

IU lost this game to Ohio State by a score of 7-47.

In a phone conversation I had with Lee Corso on December 21, 2016 he said that after this game he travelled to Indianapolis to tape The Lee Corso Show at WISH-TV 8. He saw a coffin in the studio and decided to use it to open the show. He did not wear a Dracula costume as is sometimes reported, but rather his street clothes. As the show opens he pops out of the coffin and says "Hello folks, it's Lee Corso. We ain't dead yet." He also mentioned that Chet Choppock was the co-host. Choppock went on to a news career in Chicago. I also talked to Choppock on the phone the same day and he confirmed Corso's thoughts above, but that while he was not sure of the game he was fairly certain it was the 1976 Ohio State game. Also, at present (2017) no photograph can be found of Lee Corso with the entire team in front of the scoreboard after IU took a 7-6 lead in the second quarter of this game. A player, who wants to rename anonymous, told me that the photograph was not taken. Brad Cook, Curator of Photographs, Indiana University Archives 8/28/2017 and 10/11/2017. NOTE: there is no mention or photo of such an event in the following Monday's (Nov. 1, 1976) Indiana Daily Student.

From a November 14, 1977 Sports Illustrated article by John Underwood: "In the...second quarter in its game with Ohio State last year, Indiana scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point. Lee Corso...immediately called time and huddled his players on the sideline, where he had a photographer take a picture of the happy group at an angle which allowed the scoreboard to fill the background..."
