Home designed by John L. Nichols for A.O. Henry of the Henry & Kerr Bakery

image number:

description:

This image scanned from the scrapbook of architect John L. Nichols. This particular image was found on a page directly opposite of a letter from A. O. Henry on Henry and Kerr Bakery stationary in which he states, in part: "Considering the amount of money expended in the erection of my new home on East Kirkwood Avenue, I think the same is as near perfection both in design and arrangement..."

This house sat directly between the home that stood on the northwest corner of Indiana and Kirkwood and the old Von Lee movie theater on the north side of Kirkwood Avenue.

Note that the 1907 and 1913 Sanborn Fire Insurance maps show this residence as 521 East Kirkwood. The 1922-1923 Bloomington City Directory shows Almer O. and Margaret B. Henry living at 514 E. Kirkwood. It is possible that at some point the Henry family moved 521 to 514, but it is also possible that the city directory has the incorrect address or that 521 later became 514.

According to the January 24, 1899 edition of the Republican Progress "Architect John L. Nichols has let the contract for the residence of A. O. Henry, east Kirkwood avenue, to Joe McKinley, for $2,400. The building is to be two stories and with all the modern improvements."
