description:

The instrument at extreme right and directly in front of Clark Wissler is a "Vertical Kymograph". The April 1895 Indiana University Catalogue (page 58) lists that the Department of Philosophy has in its possession "...Petzold's latest model of the Ludwig Kymograph..."

Kymographs were first used by physiologists to record blood pressure. Psychologists used the same instrument to record muscle exertion, response times and other physchological responses to stimulus.

The instrument at extreme left (just to Edward Ritter's left side) is usually referred to as a "Kymograph for continuing supplied paper". This device records, on a roll of paper, what the Vertical Kymograph is detecting.

location of individuals:

(L to R) Edward M. Ritter, William Lowe Bryan, John Andrew Bergstrom, Clark David Wissler.

NOTE: The person at far left has, at times, been identified as James P. Porter. However, a July 18, 1951 letter from Ivy Chamness (I.U. Publications) to William Lowe Bryan mentions that Porter himself said that that was not himself in the photo. Chamness then mentions that the copy of this photograph in the Archives (scanned and seen here) has the man identified as "________ Ritter".

A check of records in the Office of the Registrar has found that Edward M. Ritter attended Indiana University from the fall of 1893 through the end of the spring semester of 1896. He did not graduate.

A check of the 1898 Arbutus yearbook finds Porter on pages 38-39. The man pictured in the yearbook does not at all look like the man in the image seen here.

A check of the 1896 Arbutus yearbook finds Ritter on pages 122-123. The man in the front row matches the man in the image seen here.
