description:

Due to a housing shortage, and for a short time, the board room / conference room in the President's Office was used to house students. The student population at I.U. more than doubled after the end of World War II.

A portion of this image appears on page 47 of the September/October 1991 issue of the Indiana Alumni Magazine. Part of the caption reads: "A group of 12 vets who took advantage of the GI Bill in September 1946 had to bunk in the trustees' meeting room in Bryan Hall. They spent six weeks in their temporary quarters because student housing was in short supply... 'We studied in President Wells' office', Churchill recalls. Atwater remembers that they used the president's 'private lavatory for our daily ablutions and the secretary's typewriter to type our freshman compositions.' According to Hughes, Wells dropped in every morning to greet them. 'I have a warm spot in my heart for IU because they went the extra mile for us,' Atwater says."
