image number:

A handwritten letter on Indiana Daily Student stationary that accompanies this image reads, in full: "June 3, 1977 | Chancellor Wells, | Enclosed is a picture I took | of you one Saturday afternoon as | you were walking to work. I've | had many requests for the picture | and thought you might like to | have a copy. | Sincerely, | Rick Wood | editor-in-chief"

A copy of Wells' reply to Wood is also present. It is typed on University Chancellor stationary and reads, in full: "June 14, 1977 | Mr. Rick Wood | Editor-in-Chief | Indiana Daily Student | Ernie Pyle Hall | Bloomington, In 47401 | Dear Rick: | Than you for the picture which you used in the Indiana | Daily Student. As you probably know, it is being rather | widely used throughout the state by The News-Sentinel of | Fort Wayne with a feature, The Courier-Journal, and the | newspapers in Vincennes and Terre Haute. | You are a good photographer and apparently you struck me | in a pose that people liked. | It is always a pleasure to see you. I think you are doing | a good job as editor of the paper this summer. | Sincerely yours, | [signature] Herman B Wells | Herman B Wells | University Chancellor"

The cane that Wells is carrying can be found in the collections of the University Archives (accession number 2004/087).
