description:

Eagleson was the first African-American to be a member of an IU intercollegiate sports team. He played on the 1892, 1893, 1894 and 1895 football teams. Page 15 of the November 1, 1892 edition of The Indiana Daily Student mentions "Eagleson will make very fine halfback." The Crawfordsville Daily Journal of November 21, 1892 (page 3) lists Eagleson in the roster and mentions in the text, in part (regarding the game vs. Wabash): "Eagleson, the phenomenal colored player on the I.U. team is but 16 years old and is a freshman. He will be celebrated when he graduates if he keeps improving." The Indianapolis News (page 5) of November 14, 1892, in part (regarding the game vs. Purdue): "After good work and gains by Ferreman and Eagleson, a colored player...The second half was shortened thirty minutes. Shafer, Ferreman and Eagleson did I.U.'s best playing." This image is a detail from the 1895 football team (see image P0023474).
