description:

This image scanned from page 113 of the 1912 Arbutus yearbook. The photograph accompanies a lengthy poem entitled "The Ballad Of The Fizzle-Ship."

After trying to avoid a previuosly-unseen barbed-wire fence, Horace Kearney crashed his plane on Dunn Meadow. The University Archives has a reference file on this incident in its reference files under "B&G - Dunn Meadow - Airplane Crash of 1911".

On December 12, 1912 Kearney and a reporter by the name of Chester Lawrence were killed when Kearney's plane "Snookums" crashed into the Pacific Ocean.

Page 83 of the 1912 Gothic yearbook of Bloomington High School has a printed drawing of the incident at Dunn Meadow with the caption, in full: "At the site of Gilbert Luzzader." Also, on page 79 of the same yearbook, under the October 11th heading, in full: "Booster's Day. Aviator sees Gilbert Luzzadder's face and loses nerve." Gilber Luzadder was graduated from Bloomington High School in 1912. He played baseball and football while a student there, but it is not known why Gilbert Luzadder is twice referred to in this yearbook about the plane crash.
