location of individuals: | (Front Row, L to R) Kenny Porter, Ed Wolfe, Charles Gustave "Bud" Dant, Herbie Kay, Ronnie Spangler (this person may not be Spangler. It looks like Wad Allen), and Andy van Sickle. (Back Row, L to R) "Mac" McCormick, Slim Lamer, Sam Chase, "Fuzzy" Cowles, and Jim Johnston. (Seated on hood of bus, L to R) Fred "Yah" Murry who was a cousin of Hoagy Carmichael, and Dorothy Lamour. NOTE: Various biographical information regarding both Herbie Kay and Dorothy Lamour put the date of Dorothy Lamour touring with the Herbie Kay Orchestra at 1935 (one puts the date at 1934). The fact that this photograph appears in the 1933 Arbutus yearbook proves that she was touring with the group as early as the fall of 1932 or early 1933. A search of The Indiana Daily Student to try and pinpoint the date, names of band members, and event, etc. has not yet been conducted. Also, the woman on the hood of the bus does appear to be Dorothy Lamour and not Ellen Conner or Wynne Fair who also toured with the band. NOTE: In April 2015 Donna Matsook, Dorothy Lamour’s assistant for nearly twenty years, confirmed that the woman in this image is Dorothy Lamour. |
