Downtown Bloomington

description:

In the foreground of the image is a marker that, as of the 1910 Census, noted the exact population center of the United States located in Bloomington, where there were an equal number of people living North, South, East, and West. This population center was originally at the Showers Brother factory on Morton Street. The Showers Brothers had the marker made, using this distinction of being "The Center of the Universe" in advertising. The marker was moved to the front lawn of the Monroe County Courthouse after the factory was closed in 1955.
