description:

The view is west through Dunn's Woods. Kirkwood Avenue can be seen just to left of center. One can also see the tower of the old Monroe County Courthouse just to the right of the tree at center.

This image appears on page 23 of "Images of America: Bloomington and Indiana University" (Arcadia Publishing, 2002). The caption reads, in full: "Indiana University moved to 80 wooded acres east of downtown after fire raged through Science Hall on the Seminary Square campus on July 12, 1883. The citizens of Monroe County pledged $50,000 to help rebuild. The new campus, called Dunn's Woods, was photographed looking west in 1891. Kirkwood stretched away toward the courthouse. The houses in the distance would have been located along the future Indiana Avenue."
