description:

The image seen here is from a set of three prints sold through the Indiana University Alumni Association during Indiana University's 150 birthday. The set was somewhat loosely known as the "Sesquicentennial Portrait of Indiana" or "Indiana Portrait". For the other two prints see images P0021415 and P0024169.

The first advertisement for this set of prints appears to have been the inside back cover of the November 1970 edition of the Indiana Alumni Magazine. The advertisement states that the original paintings "...will of course belong to the University's permanent fine arts collection, the decision was made to authorize a limited number of full color, full-size reproductions of the paintings. A complete set of three paintings - First Edition reproductions on fine watercolor style paper - makes an unusually thoughtful and valued Christmas gift at only $20 per set." While the advertisement mentions "...full-size reproduction..." it does not mention the actual size of the originals or the reproductions. The next advertisement for the prints in the Indiana Alumni Magazine doesn't appear until the November 1971 edition (see below).

Page 25 of the February 1971 edition of the Indiana Alumni Magazine shows the original paintings with a caption that reads, in part: "Richard H. Schmalz, president of the Alumni Association...presents to the Indiana Memorial Union three original paintings...by artist John Walter, The pictures...are accepted by Gail Ransom, Union Board president..."

The back cover of the November 1971 edition of the Indiana Alumni Magazine consists of another advertisement for the prints with a letter from Alumni Secretary Frank Jones, in part: "I'm sure you will recall my letter to you last Spring telling you that...John Walter had been commissioned to create a 3-part 'Portrait' of Indiana...we thought you might like to know that a few, consecutively numbered, complete sets still remain..." In this advertisement the cost was still $20 per set and it shows sizes of 18x24 (Student Building and Maxwell Hall), 16x12 for the other two in the set.

Page 19 of the December 1977 edition of the Indiana Alumni Magazine shows the set of prints being sold at $15 shipping included. Sizes are the same as mentioned in the November 1971 edition.

The inside front cover of the June 1980 edition of the Indiana Alumni Magazine shows the set of prints being sold at $15 per set, or $5 each plus postage and handling of $1.25. Sizes are the same as mentioned in the November 1971 edition.
