Cornelius Pering by his daughter Cornelia

description:

The painting of Cornelius Pering by his daughter Cornelia was supposedly copied from a crayon drawing by Xantippe or Zautippe Saunders. Written on the back of the painting, in full: "C. Pering artist 1843". It is unlikely that Cornelia would have painted her father in 1843 as she was only 3 years old at the time. Some of the earliest known artwork by Cornelia dates to 1880, and I believe that she may have made this painting, from the crayon drawing or painted over the crayon drawing, in 1880 or sometime in the years after Cornelius' death in 1881, and may simply have put the date of the original crayon drawing on the back of the painting itself.
