Henry Henley was the grandfather of George Washington Henley, Jr. who was a member of the IU Board of Trustees from 1945-1951.

Henry Henley was a Captain of Company A of the 17th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. He moved to Bloomington in 1871, was elected surveyor of Monroe County in 1872, and was the founder of the South Side Stone Company.

Henry Henley applied for a patent for his improvement in bed springs on July 13, 1878. Patent number 221,555 was granted on November 11, 1879.
