description:

Image shows the Bryans on the day that faculty, staff, and students cut down more than 200 old apple trees to make way for the Men's Gymnasium that would be completed in 1917.

"The World's Greatest Athlete, Jim Thorpe, assistant IU football coach in 1915, was also to attend the event. The Indiana Daily Student newspaper for October 22, 1915 (page 1) said he intends to show "...Indiana people how a real scout can handle the axe."

The Men's Gymnasium is today (2012) part of the Ora L. Wildermuth Fieldhouse and School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation complex of buildings. In particular, it is the the building on the southwest portion of the HPER complex of buildings (i.e. the building nearest the Indiana Memorial Union Building).
